Fireworks for the feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel at Żurrieq, manufactured by locals are documented way back to 1801, within the records of the Confraternity of Our Lay of Mount Carmel. Among the fireworks mentioned in these records, one finds the petards “maskli” and the “tapit” consisting of an artistic design representing a castle. Its display lasted nearly three-quarters of an hour.
The Carmelite Society was founded in the mid-1800s and at time, works were being carried out in the vicinity of the Chapel of Our Lady of Mecrcy (“Il-Madonna tal-Ħniena”), limits of Qrendi. Several years later, fireworks were being manufactured in small rooms in the village countryside – “Fuq ir-Riħ ta’ Babu”, an area know as “Ta’ l-Għerien”.
Since the amount of fireworks produced for the feast was increasing, these rooms were becoming more and more insufficient. Fortunately on the 19th of January 1964, the Carmelite Society acquired a piece of terrain at “Ix-Xagħra ta’ Babu”. This was the ideal site for the Mount Carmel Fireworks Factory and in a relatively short period of time, the building was completed.
Throughout the years, the Mount Carmel Fireworks Factory Team always excelled in the aerial and ground fireworks displays, especially during the feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, celebrated on the third Sunday of July. The Mount Carmel Fireworks Factory took part in several cultural and national events, including the 25th Anniversary of Independence Day amd the New Millenium Celebrations.
Presently, the Mount Carmel Fireworks Factory is the overall winner of the Malta International Fireworks Festival 2007. The Mount Carmel Fireworks Factory won the following categories: 1) best fireworks shells 2) best colours 3) best original firework products 4) best choreography 5) best display according to public opinion
The Carmelite Society thanks and honours all those who throughout the years contributed to the success of Mount Carmel Fireworks Factory.
