Following the development in IT and communications sector, on Sunday 6th May 2003, during a meeting held at the band club, it was decided that the Carmelite Society and Queen Victoria Band should have their own radio station.
The society’s radio station was set up with the aims of: Transmitting live all activities held during the feast for the benefit of all those who cannot participate; Giving information about the Carmelite cult, the Carmelite Society and Queen Victoria Band, Zurrieq and its people.
On Saturday 19th July 2003, Dr.J.Darmanin inaugurated the official transmissions of radio station ‘Leħen il-Karmelitani’, aired on 101.4 FM. From a fully-equipped studio at the club’s premises, ‘Leħen il-Karmelitani’ , transmits various programmes including those of different music genres, programmes focusing on local and international band marches, religious programmes, and educational programmes focusing on Maltese history and folklore, interviews with local personalities and radio plays. During the month of July, all transmissions are streamed live on www.carmelitesocietyzurrieq.org.
‘Leħen il-Karmelitani’, transmits during the Christmas festive season as well, with the main aim of collecting money in aid of St.Theresa Home, run by the sisters of the Sacred Heart. The last three days of live transmission, together with other activities, are held under a tent at Republic Square. In the last four years, by means of the solidarity campaign, ‘Minn Qalb iż-Żrieraq’ more than € 9,302 (Lm 4,000) were collected. Thanks to the DJs, presenters, and technicians who work on a voluntary basis and to those individuals and companies who advertise their products and services, our radio station is becoming more and more popular. 'Leħen il-Karmelitani', has also its fan club ‘TEN 14 Club’, consisting of around 300 members.
However, there is always room for improvement and we are doing our utmost to ensure high quality programmes and live transmissions.
